The Best Sun Protection Routine? More Is More

We love a one-and-done solution, but sun protection just doesn’t have one.

Sunscreen protects exposed skin but only when you apply enough and remember to reapply. Sun-protective clothing covers more surface area, but dressing from head to toe in it isn’t always practical. Hats and sunglasses help too, but only where they provide coverage.

Every sun-protection tool has its strengths and its gaps. The good news? No single one has to do all the work. Used together, they create a more comprehensive suncare routine that lets you enjoy your time outside with a little more confidence.

Start With Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen

Broad-spectrum sunscreen helps protect exposed skin from both UVA and UVB radiation. Choose SPF 30 or higher, apply it generously, and reapply at least every two hours—especially after swimming or sweating.

Pay extra attention to easy-to-miss areas like your ears, neck, hands, and feet. Sunscreen only works where you put it!

Add Sun-Protective Clothing and SunClad

Clothing can protect large areas of skin without needing to be reapplied. Long sleeves, pants, higher necklines, and wide-brimmed hats all add physical coverage.

SunClad makes it effortless to make sure that your clothes are protecting your skin from UV rays by just adding sun protection directly into your laundry routine.

Don’t Forget Hats and Sunglasses

A wide-brimmed hat helps protect your face, scalp, ears, and neck—areas that are notoriously easy to miss with sunscreen.

UV-blocking sunglasses protect your eyes and the delicate skin around them. Look for sunglasses labeled to block 99% to 100% of UVA and UVB rays.

Again, no single layer has to carry the whole routine.

What to Remember

The best sun protection doesn’t come from relying on one perfect product. It comes from combining multiple forms of UV protection in a way that works for your life.

Apply broad-spectrum SPF. Wear UPF clothing and/or add SunClad to everyday clothes. And put on a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.

Every layer has a gap, but having more layers help to cover those gaps so you can enjoy your time outside more safely.
